Contract Hit

Colin ‘Big C’ Robinson blasted through the challenge of Dave Wilson to retain his S & S Heavyweight belt. He then announced that he had signed a 3 fight deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship; kicking off with a match against Eddie Sanchez in Belfast in mid June.

The challenge of Dave ‘Unpredictable’ Wilson lasted just over a minute. It was soon clear that he would be happier on the floor, but Robinson was having none of it. After a session of inconclusive clinch work, Wilson eventually managed to drag ‘Big C’ to the ground. Unfortunately for him, Robinson was on top and had his head in striking range. Just imagine that situation for a second. You’re on your back and you’ve got over 18 stone of conditioned slugger on top of you, ready to go to work rearranging your face and mental faculties. After tasting a couple of monster thumps, Dave Wilson tapped out.

No one can say for sure how far Colin Robinson can progress in the sport. The thing is: he’s from a great team, he’s a genuine Heavyweight and he can bang. With those qualifications- you’re always going to have a chance.

Per Eklund (Hilti NHB Sweden) v Dave Metcalf (Washington Vale Tudo)

Dave Metcalf failed to take the Lightweight belt from the highly impressive Per Eklund. At the off, Per lifted Metcalf before dumping him to earth with a massive slam. The Swede spent the majority of round one on top in Dave’s half guard. He eventually passed and looked for an arm. Metcalf managed to spin out and looked poised to start unloading decisively. Ding, Dong: Eklund saved by the bell.

Round two started with another Eklund takedown. He remained on top in side control- feeding a succession of thudding knees into Metcalf’s ribs. The weakened challenger finally had to tap when Eklund applied a Kimura. Dave Metcalf is a skilled fighter with a lot of guts. He was always in the fight- but Eklund was just too good on the night. The Swede is pure class and you get the feeling he’d be too good for most Lightweights.

Les Ojugbana (SJJ) v Paul Hopkins (G Barra, Birmingham)

Les ‘Hollywood’ Ojugbana: if ever a fighter lives up to his nickname it’s Les. The lad is made for Cage Rage. Handsome (You know those Cockneys love a good looking boy), brash, confident- the kid oozes charisma. From his massive warm up jumps and huge takedown through to his ground and pound finish and cage top celebration- you can’t take your eyes off him for a second. On the mic he announced upcoming fights with Diego Gonzales and Paul Jenkins. After those; we’ll be able to see how much substance there is behind the indisputable style.

Kevin McAlonan (UFR Fight) v Navid Yousefi (Hilti NHB Sweden)

Greg Loughran (UFR Fight) v Arran Barrow (WVT)

As at the recent Total Combat 19, it was 3-0 for the UFR Fight Team. The boys from Northern Ireland obviously love the North East. Both fights followed similar scripts. Yousefi clearly didn’t fancy any of ‘Bam Bam’ McAlonan’s sharp stand up and struggled to take him down. When he managed it, the Swede found himself on top, but caught in guard. McAlonan contained Yousefi’s attack before working him into an armbar.

Loughran also scored from the bottom, calmly snaring the aggressive Arran Barrow in a triangle.

Accomplished and impossible to knock off their stride. On current form: Are UFR the best fight team in the UK?

Martin Wilby(Gracie Barra Doncaster) v Ahad Mohammed(G Barra B’ham)

Ahad was on top dishing out the punishment for most of round one. A slick move from Wilby turned the whole thing around and led to a victory through rear naked choke.

Semi Pro Fighter of the Night

Andrew Fisher (Spartan MMA) got the vote after overcoming the tough Mohammed Islam in a gruelling ground war.

Venue

Beautiful. Chandelier and everything. The kind of place posh people get married and watch Showaddywaddy. A great place to watch fights.

Crowd

Respectful, fair and surprisingly sober considering the freak sub-tropical weather conditions on Tyneside.

Team of the Night

Gracie Barra Birmingham. Went home without a win but with a lot of goodwill. Their guys fought like hell, then grinned from ear to ear. Also responsible for best entry- music. Who doesn’t like ‘Kung Fu Fighting’?

Best Nickname

Very tough competition, but we love a rhyme at hurtbusiness, so it has to be:

Chris 'Hands of Fire' McIntyre.

Heart in the Mouth Moment

Chris 'Hands of Fire' McIntyre v Steve 'No Mercy' Martin. Two game as they come Heavyweights chucking each other around like rag dolls. Tested the strength of the cage to the max. When Martin deflected McIntyre's spectacular flying knee I feared the worst. Fortunately, the net bulged but did not bust.

Quote of the Night

You don’t fucking need it.

(Ian Freeman to the distinctly non-anorexic winner of the raffle prize: a large tub of weight gain supplement)

Man of the Night

Ian Freeman. The undisputed UK MC Champion. Any newish show is going to have a few gaps, but you hardly noticed. This was his home crowd and he had them in the palm of his hand as he slipped into stand up comedy mode. Hopefully, there will be some problems at Cage Rage this weekend, then Ian will have the chance to showcase his material about donkey sex and mistakenly twatting people in Sunderland nightspots to an international TV audience.
